TaskRabbit is all about getting more done in less time. According to its website, TaskRabbit is a same-day service platform that quickly connects users with skilled Taskers in their area. These taskers help users with odd jobs, errands, and professional services.
TaskRabbit was founded in February 2008 by Leah Busque. She came up with the idea one night upon realizing she had run out of dog food. Since it was a cold and stormy night, she thought about outsourcing the task to someone else in her community to save time.
Originally called RunMyErrand, TaskRabbit became the official name in 2010. Finally, in September 2017, the Swedish home goods company Ikea acquired TaskRabbit for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition enables Ikea to offer furniture assembly and other business-related services already available on TaskRabbit.
TaskRabbit offers its users various services they could hire Taskers to help with. As a Tasker, when creating your profile, you select all the skills you want to be hired for work. Ideally, you should choose skills that reflect the business you are trying to run. Then, you will be hired for services within your selected skills that are in demand in your work area.
TaskRabbit skills and services include:
Since its start in 2008, TaskRabbit is now in cities across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Their current active locations include:
Most of these locations do cover their surrounding suburban areas. For example, the New York City market includes Western Long Island and Northeastern New Jersey.
TaskRabbit offers a diverse range of services across various locations. They aim to support freelancers in building a successful business by showcasing their unique skills and services in their local areas. To use TaskRabbit for business, you must register as an independent Tasker and meet their criteria. TaskRabbit will approve your profile if your services are in demand in your target market. Then, create a profile that showcases your business in a positive light.
The sign-up process for Taskers is standard. When I signed up to be a Tasker on TaskRabbit in 2018:
You can also create an account on TaskRabbit’s website before downloading the app.
Once I create my account and verify my identity, I select my skills, write a brief pitch for each one, and set my hourly rates.
This step lets the app know where I am willing to work. Only clients in that work area can see my profile and hire me.
I had to wait about two days for TaskRabbit to accept me.
The wait time for TaskRabbit to accept new Taskers varies. It is based more on location and skill demand than the background check. A background check only further delays acceptance if any issues come back with the report. If background check issues are not the reason for a delay in approval, then chosen skills are not in high demand in their desired work area.
TaskRabbit strives to ensure no over-saturation of Taskers with skills in areas that are not in demand by their clients. This way, all Taskers have a fair chance of getting booked for work in their area. Keep in mind that your competition is more individual freelance Taskers, like myself, than people operating with established businesses.
Before you can become a Tasker on TaskRabbit for your business, you must first meet their basic requirements. According to TaskRabbit Support, to become a Tasker, you must:
Once your Tasker account is approved, setting up your profile will be the most crucial step in the onboarding process. TaskRabbit clients will view your profile to determine if they should hire you over other taskers. To make your profile stand out, the best advice I can give is to put in the effort to make it excellent. Fortunately, since I became a Tasker in 2018, they have improved this process, allowing new Taskers to shine better with their profiles.
When setting up your Tasker profile, you will:
When setting up your Tasker account on TaskRabbit, you should first upload a profile picture of your current or most recent self. DO NOT upload a photo of your business logo. It is great that you have one, but remember, your Tasker account is YOUR individual account. It is not a company account.
Your profile picture is the very first impression TaskRabbit clients will have of you, so make sure it is a quality photo. I’m not saying wear a suit; you can if you want, I’m wearing a suit in mine. However, it is not necessary, although it can help you. Just make sure you look clean, warm, friendly, and as professional as possible. Remember, first impressions are most important, especially with TaskRabbit, where clients often make hiring decisions for their tasks within seconds.
The “Tools” section of your Tasker profile is where you indicate any special tools you may have. Having these special tools available for tasks could boost your profile because TaskRabbit clients can have huge tasks that may require them. Not only can these special tools increase your chances of getting picked for more jobs, but you can also get higher-paying jobs.
Of course, if you cannot provide any of these special tools, you can choose “I don’t have special tools.” If you do choose this option, there is no need to worry. No matter what skills you provide services in, not having any of these special tools will not hinder your Tasker account performance. Your account’s performance should be fine as long as you have the required basic tools and supplies. However, adding these tools to your profile gives you an upper hand for service skills whose tasks may need these tools to improve service quality.
Depending on the type of service(s) you wish to provide through TaskRabbit and where you wish to offer them, having reliable transportation will make or break your success as a Tasker on TaskRabbit. For example, if you live and plan on completing tasks within the New York City metro area, like me, we can get away with not having a vehicle for most tasks. We have the NYC bus and subway systems, Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH), New Jersey Transit, Long Island Railroad, Metro-North, and a combination of at least two of these transit agencies to help us get to and from our tasks in a safe and timely manner.
However, if you do not live or work in a TaskRabbit market with reliable public transportation, you should consider how to get to and from your tasks safely and promptly. Again, your success as a Tasker, first and foremost, depends on this. If you have to suck it up and use your own car, do so and track the mileage, fuel expenses, and depreciation. Or, rent a vehicle, scooter, etc., track the costs, and determine whether to pass them down to your clients or deduct them from your taxes.
At the same time, regardless of the reliability of your local public transit system or personal vehicle, your services will also dictate the type of vehicle you should have. For example, if you are providing a professional moving service, ideally, you should have a moving van or truck to transport first your tools and then your clients’ belongings. Remember, unless required or highly recommended, having specific vehicles only enhances your Tasker account and helps land you more and better-paying tasks from clients.
This section includes additional information about you and your business that potential clients should know if they apply to you. Though not required, they can play a role in the number of tasks you could get and the type of clients you could work with.
The quick facts options are:
This quick fact is meant to notify TaskRabbit clients who are considering hiring you but have pets such as dogs and cats. It may or may not inhibit your chances of getting hired. If not, then clients would just be expected to put their pets away while you’re working.
Add this quick fact to your Tasker profile if you can confidently speak multiple languages. Doing so will greatly improve your chances of getting hired by TaskRabbit clients, especially clients who do not speak English well, or at all. Upon clicking on this quick fact, you will check off the language(s) other than English you can speak fluently.
With this quick fact, my advice is to proceed with caution because it could hurt your chances of getting hired for tasks. It lets clients who are considering hiring you for their tasks know that you only take on tasks that take at least two hours to complete. Depending on the skill, not all clients booking tasks will have a job that would take two hours to complete.
Having this quick fact on your profile makes sense if you travel far to get to and from tasks. In addition, it makes sense if you travel far to a TaskRabbit market with a low rate of client demand. Traveling more than 45 minutes to a task that would barely take an hour to complete is not always feasible. In this case, having this quick fact on your profile is okay. You can reiterate your 2-hour minimum policy in your skill pitches and explain why. Nine times out of ten, potential clients will understand. Besides, they would be willing to accommodate if they really want to work with you.
If you set up your Tasker profile with multiple skills, you can specify which skills you want to set this 2-hour minimum requirement. For example, it is best not to turn on the 2-hour minimum for the Delivery or Errands skills if you provide delivery services. However, proceed with caution with adding the 2-hour minimum for skills like Help Moving or Cleaning, especially if client demand is high. Not all moving or cleaning jobs, among others, will take more than two hours to complete. Besides, if client demand is high in your TaskRabbit market, you can get multiple quick jobs in a day. You do not want to limit yourself.
The “about me” section of your Tasker profile is an essential opportunity for you to share your qualities and services. Here, you will write a detailed description of yourself, your business, and your experience. Doing this will help potential clients understand why you are the right Tasker for them and their needs.
The lack of character limits means that you can include as much information as possible, allowing you to highlight your skills and expertise effectively. By providing a comprehensive overview of your services and experience, you can build trust with potential clients and increase your chances of securing new work. So, take the time to craft an engaging and informative about me section that truly reflects who you are as a Tasker.
TaskRabbit now offers a new feature that allows Taskers to showcase their skills through photos on their profile. This section of your profile is dedicated to displaying relevant pictures of your past work experience in the skills and services you offer to TaskRabbit clients. You should also include photos of the tools, supplies, and the vehicle you can provide for your tasks.
The main purpose of this section is to visually demonstrate to potential clients what you bring to the table. By displaying your past work experience and the resources you can offer, clients can see what you’re capable of. It’s one thing to mention your experience and tools in writing, but being able to show it through photos is a game-changer.
One final important aspect of setting up your tasker profile is choosing the one or more skills and services you wish to provide to TaskRabbit’s clients. This step is crucial because your selected skills are how TaskRabbit organizes your tasker account in their system. It is, first, the skills you choose, then your availability, and how your tasker account is listed on TaskRabbit’s client-facing platform in their search results.
When choosing your skill(s), you will do three things:
You must be careful and strategic when setting your rates for your chosen skill(s) because you are competing with other taskers for the same clients. Your rates should be fair to both you and the clients. At the same time, your rates should be competitive so clients can choose you over the next tasker.
TaskRabbit’s system will set a starting rate for you. As you continue being a Tasker, they will recommend when you should increase your rates. These systematic decisions are often based on the strength of your Tasker account, which would consider factors like:
Keep in mind that abiding by TaskRabbit’s recommended rates is totally voluntary. If you feel that given the amount of tools and supplies, plus a vehicle, you plan on providing for your tasks, you should charge more than what TaskRabbit is recommending. By all means, go ahead and raise your rate.
On the flip side, if, as time goes on, you feel like TaskRabbit is recommending you increase your rate too high to the point where you notice a decrease in task requests, feel free to stop listening to them and keep your rates at levels you think are appropriate. Remember, your rates must be fair to your clients and competitive against other Taskers.
The tools you indicated in the Tools section of your profile are just SPECIAL tools meant to add value to your overall tasker profile. However, when it is time to provide details for the skill(s) you’ve chosen, you will indicate the BASIC tools you can provide that are needed to complete tasks under that skill.
For example, let’s say you want to provide a cleaning service to TaskRabbit’s clients. On the “Tools” section of your Tasker profile, you can select “Carpet cleaner,” “Eco-friendly cleaning products,” “Power washer,” and “Vacuum” if you can provide them. However, when you add the “Cleaning” skill to your profile, you must indicate whether you can bring basic supplies, a mop, and a vacuum. Basic supplies include multi-purpose cleaners, dish soap, bleach, floor cleaners, sponges, paper towels, rags, etc. Traditional mops with buckets, any Swiffer, portable, and steam mops all qualify.
TaskRabbit requires that Taskers provide as many (if not all) of the basic tools and supplies they deem necessary to complete tasks in that skill. They may be less likely to promote your account if you have none (if not all) of them. Even if they do, clients will be less likely to pick your Tasker account because they can see that you lack the basics needed to get the job done.
Finally, make sure your pitch stands out from everyone else. Write about your experience within your chosen skill(s) and why you are the best Tasker for the job. Be descriptive and persuasive, but make sure you get to the point. Client’s attention spans can be short when their need for help is high. You are only allowed 500 characters, so make it count.
Side note: If you chose “I require a 2-hour minimum” in the Quick Facts section, reiterate it in your pitch. Some clients will genuinely not see it right away on your profile, while others will act like they did not see it at all. Also, include any other important details you want clients to know beforehand to avoid confusion or conflicts. However, make sure those additional details do not deviate away from the limited persuasive message you must still provide.
As a Tasker for TaskRabbit, you can create your own work map. This map indicates where you are available and willing to work, allowing clients to hire you for tasks within your designated work area. You can draw one shape on the map that covers up to 500 square miles.
Recently, an update was made to this process that introduced a heat map. This feature displays shades of green on parts of the map, indicating the level of client demand in specific areas such as cities, towns, and neighborhoods. The darker the shade of green, the higher the client demand is in that area. This means that Taskers have a better chance of getting hired for tasks in these high-demand areas. While you can only draw one circle on the map, covering up to 500 square miles, the aim is to draw over as many green-shaded areas as possible.
The final step to complete your Tasker profile is to set your availability. This is a crucial step in maintaining your profile, as it allows you to schedule your availability up to two weeks in advance and indicate specific time windows for work. You can also accept Same-Day tasks if you’re free. The Tasker app can also sync to your personal calendar, helping you avoid overbooking and maintain a work-life balance.
It’s important to keep track of your availability and ensure your schedule on the Tasker app is always up-to-date. Be sure to update your availability as early as possible when you are or are not available, as sudden changes can affect your ability to get work when needed. I suggest updating your availability at least 48 hours in advance when client demand is high. I’ve learned from personal experience that relying on same-day tasks doesn’t always work out.

As a Tasker on TaskRabbit, you have complete control over your schedule and can choose the jobs you want to take on. Having this amount of flexibility is fantastic because:
TaskRabbit’s tasker-facing interface provides everything you need to be flexible with your time and services. First, you set your schedule in the Tasker app and make changes that will reflect in TaskRabbit’s client-facing interface in real-time. TaskRabbit is designed to increase the earning potential of freelancers. For starters, its taskers have access to TaskRabbit’s growing number of clients who sign up for TaskRabbit to seek help for tasks in a variety of services in many skills and industries. This means that in terms of marketing for your business, TaskRabbit already takes care of this for freelancers on their platform as Taskers.
Freelance taskers have the freedom to set their own rates. This feature allows you to determine a fair and justifiable hourly fee for your services. When choosing your rates for your skills and services, you can consider various factors like:
Ultimately, this approach helps ensure that taskers provide top-notch services while earning a reasonable wage. Add in the flexibility perks mentioned earlier and high client demand, and you can make a lot of money for your business.
TaskRabbit offers a unique opportunity for individuals to showcase their skills and establish themselves as reliable and trustworthy. By consistently providing exceptional service, taskers can cultivate a positive reputation and receive recurring work from satisfied clients. Additionally, favorable feedback from previous clients can improve your chances of getting hired by new clients. The more five-star ratings you earn, the higher TaskRabbit will place your account in their clients’ search results.
One of the advantages of using TaskRabbit to establish a good reputation for yourself and your business is the opportunity to expand your client base beyond the platform through networking. It is common to receive referrals from satisfied TaskRabbit clients for their family members, friends, or coworkers. By delivering quality service to your TaskRabbit clients, you may attract more business opportunities elsewhere.
Like in any business, bad things can happen. As a freelancer, things can really go wrong because, in many circumstances, you are by yourself. Running a business, especially on your own, can be hard when you do not have people to ask for help. Luckily, as a Tasker for TaskRabbit, you can quickly get the support you need.
TaskRabbit offers support from a dedicated team who are available to help with any questions or concerns you may have. If you have an issue with a task or a client, you can contact TaskRabbit support for help and guidance. TaskRabbit also provides resources and tools to help you manage your business more efficiently. For example, TaskRabbit handles all the administrative tasks, such as billing and payment processing, so you can focus on doing the work you love. They also provide how-to guides and tips on doing specific skills and services. The goal is to add them to your profile and increase your chances of getting booked for tasks.
TaskRabbit has partnered with several third-party businesses and services to offer discounts to their taskers. These discounts not only benefit Taskers’ personal lives but can also help save costs for business purposes.
As part of the Affordable Care Act, individuals, including freelancers, must have healthcare. At the same time, Taskers should have layers of protection if something goes wrong. This is why TaskRabbit partners with businesses that help freelancers find affordable health care and other services that provide a safety net against issues that prevent them from doing their jobs.
TaskRabbit partners with Stride Health, which provides healthcare recommendations for freelancers like Taskers.
With the partnership with Lively, Taskers can use tax-free funds from their Health Savings Account (HSA) to help pay for out-of-pocket medical, dental, and vision expenses.
TaskRabbit extends its healthcare perks even further by partnering with NURX. They provide affordable healthcare services such as birth control, at-home STD testing, emergency contraception, and more. Through NURX, Taskers will receive $1 off every month for the first three months of birth control.
Avibra offers Taskers $1,000 worth of Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance without extra charges. Additionally, Avibra also provides basic insurance coverage for other aspects.
Not that Taskers should be in a situation where they or their loved ones need personal security. However, if that is the case, Bond offers Taskers their premium $450/year professional-grade 24/7 safety services for a steep discount.
TaskRabbit has partnered with some financial platforms to help Taskers manage, save, and invest the money they make with the app.
Taskers will receive a $10 bonus when they sign up for Acorns to invest spare change from everyday purchases.
Level will provide funding for Taskers to help grow their business with TaskRabbit. All Taskers need to do is link their TaskRabbit earnings. As long as the time and income requirements are met, Taskers could receive $250-$10,000 in about one business day. No credit check, business license, or social security number is needed to apply.
Keeper Tax provides Taskers 53% off their tax filing and expense tracking service. I recommend this service so you can easily have all of your expenses organized and ready for tax season.
TaskRabbit partners with companies to help provide exclusive discounts for Taskers who need tools and supplies for their business.
TaskRabbit partners with AT&T to give Taskers a 10% discount on phones and plans. This is useful if you want a separate phone and/or phone number for your business.
Taskers can save up to 80% at Office Depot and Office Max for all office, handyperson, and cleaning supplies.
To be a successful Tasker for your TaskRabbit-based business, here are some important tips you should know. They are based on my personal experience as an individual tasker and my business background.
No matter how you run your business through TaskRabbit, I recommend you create a business plan before going all in. I did not write a business plan before becoming a Tasker because I treat my work on TaskRabbit as personal income. However, if you plan on operating as an established business, you should create a business plan. This tip is critical if you plan to grow your business outside the platform.
A detailed business plan is invaluable for any entrepreneur looking to establish a successful business. This document serves as a framework for outlining your ideas, goals, and strategies for your business. Also, your business plan can be revisited and refined over time to ensure that your business remains on track and in line with your original vision.
Finally, It is crucial to have a business plan prepared to present to potential lenders if you intend to seek financing to facilitate your growth. By drafting a business plan thoughtfully, you can better understand your market, evaluate potential risks and challenges, and establish a clear roadmap for achieving your goals.
If you are trying to operate a business through TaskRabbit, after creating a business, I also recommend you establish your business. This means registering your business with your state as a sole proprietorship, LLC (Limited Liability Company), or any other formal business entity you believe is necessary.
The purpose of establishing your business as a formal business entity is to help mitigate risk, especially personal risk, while on the job. As mentioned earlier, anything bad could happen when working as a Tasker for TaskRabbit. Depending on the tasks gone wrong, it could lead to potential legal trouble. By establishing a business for your TaskRabbit endeavors, any impacts to liable risk could be limited only to your business entity and not affect you personally.
Most importantly, having an established business with its own name could be used for your marketing efforts. At the same time, it can help boost your credibility. TaskRabbit’s clients like to work with quality and reputable Taskers to help get their tasks done. By marketing your TaskRabbit services as a registered business to your clients, you increase their hope that they are working with a reputable professional. As a result, they are more likely to recommend your business and services to other potential clients outside of the TaskRabbit platform.

Even though you sign up as a Tasker with your personal information, after you are approved, you can create a separate name for your business and register that name. While you can establish your TaskRabbit business and file your information with your state yourself, it is best to consult an attorney. Attorneys are great for crafting the documents you must submit to your state, such as your business’ Articles of Incorporation and Operating Agreement. At the same time, attorneys will help you establish your business so your potential legal exposure is limited as best as possible.
Insurance is important no matter how you plan to be a Tasker on TaskRabbit. Having personal insurance is vital so that you are covered in the event of any task-related accidents. At the same time, if you want to establish a business entity for your TaskRabbit work, I recommend getting business insurance. It will help further reduce your personal and legal risk if any of your tasks go wrong.
As mentioned in this article’s third-party perks and benefits section, TaskRabbit partners with Avibra to provide additional insurance policies for Taskers. Avibra offers Taskers $1,000 worth of Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance without extra charges. Also, for $1 per week, Avibra provides insurance policies for freelancers for:
Finding quality and affordable business insurance will require some research. I recommend consulting with an attorney about specific business insurance you will need for your business.
Even though you are an individual tasker for TaskRabbit, you still provide a service for your business. When I say “use TaskRabbit as a marketing tool,” I mean treat each task as an opportunity to promote your business. TaskRabbit already provides the basic marketing for you by listing your profile to their clients. It is on you to provide a quality and memorable service so you can keep getting work. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO NETWORK!
Before you begin accepting tasks on TaskRabbit, it is crucial to solidify what you can and cannot do for clients on this platform. For someone who treats TaskRabbit as a personal source of income, trust me, this tip is important. Sometimes, you may get booked by clients who expect you to exceed your limits.
When setting up your Tasker profile, you should include as much information as possible on:
Even with this information on your profile, you must also be prepared to reiterate it in your initial conversations with clients upon getting booked for a task. By knowing your task limitations and enforcing them with your clients, you mitigate avoidable potential issues. At the same time, you are ensuring a quality task experience for both you and your client.
If you have horrible time management, you are in luck. Being a Tasker for TaskRabbit provides plenty of opportunities to practice good time management. Staying organized with your time will be crucial if you want to be successful in both TaskRabbit and your overall business. That is why it is important to practice good time management.
A great feature TaskRabbit provides us Taskers is the ability to manage our schedule on their platform. First, we can sync our Apple and Google calendars to the Tasker app and our booked tasks to the same external calendars. Also, we set our availability for tasks in the app based on our calendars, so clients will only book us for jobs during the days and time windows we put in.
Using these features to practice good time management will help you organize your business and personal time. You will not have to worry about overbooking yourself and accidentally scheduling gigs within the same time as each other. Most importantly, you will be able to know best when to have a work-life balance, which is always important.
This tip is simple: charge a fair rate to your clients. Remember, you want your rates to be competitive against other Taskers in your area. At the same time, if you know your services can or will require more time and resources from you, then charge however much you feel you must charge your clients. As long as your profile can back up your rates via additional information you provide, clients will understand and make their decisions accordingly.
As a Tasker for TaskRabbit, as with any freelance or established business, you will incur many task-related expenses. The good news is that TaskRabbit allows their Taskers to add any approved costs of up to $500 (depending on the type of service) to their invoices to clients to be reimbursed. Both full disclosure of expenses and client understanding are required.
However, not all incurred expenses can be reimbursed by clients. These expenses should still be tracked for your taxes. First, your Self-Employed Profit and Loss Statement will require these expenses. Also, you should keep track of these expenses to further deduct them from your taxes. As mentioned earlier, TaskRabbit partners with Keeper Tax so you can easily keep track of your expenses.
To keep being booked for tasks on TaskRabbit, there are two things you must do:
TaskRabbit uses these, among other info, to establish your profile metrics. By having and keeping good metrics, TaskRabbit will treat your profile more favorably when showing it to potential clients. The more clients you get on TaskRabbit, the more money you make. Also, you will have more opportunities to grow your business.
In my Tasker for TaskRabbit Review, one of the critiques I give TaskRabbit is their most recent updates are more geared toward people with business. While it can be frustrating for someone like me, who is not trying to run a business, it is a great opportunity for you. You truly can thrive as a Tasker for TaskRabbit if you treat it like a business. Just make sure your profile is set up accordingly and provide exceptional service at all times.
